Dr. Austin views her role as a physician and that of a "medical detective" with excitement. The challenge to discover the underlying cause of illness and the search for answers is a privilege that she approaches with great vigor. Dr. Austin firmly believes that as these answers are discovered, the ultimate reward is improving the lives of her patients.
Her desire is to include all aspects of the patients' story in addressing the cause of illness, utilizing a comprehensive approach to reach a diagnosis and improve health. She employs a blend of the best of conventional medicine with evidence based alternative therapies and addresses all potential factors including (but not limited to): hormonal, immune, digestive, detoxification, and inflammatory imbalances. Dr. Austin is excited to apply this approach to patients of all ages.
A passion for functional and integrative medicine, specifically nutritional medicine, began as a young teenager when she read Mental & Elemental Nutrients by Carl Pfeiffer, MD PhD. While exploring this book, Annemieke became fascinated with the way nutrition can affect our brain function and behavior. Immediately she knew she had found her career path as a physician and soon began applying what she was learning at this young age to help with some of her own health issues.
Dr. Austin's dedication to healthy living is more than just an occupational coincidence. It is a way of life. She is an outspoken advocate for health and enjoys speaking at conferences to all ages on nutrition and its importance in preventing chronic disease. In addition, Dr. Austin is an avid athlete having competed in multiple triathlons with several top-place finishes to her credit. Any given day you can find her hiking, mountain biking, swimming, cycling, or running the hills of Northern California.
Dr. Austin is an honors graduate of Loma Linda School of Medicine. While attending Loma Linda she was inducted as a member into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society recognizing medical students who have excelled academically, demonstrated professionalism, and have shown promise of becoming leaders in the profession. In addition, Dr. Austin received a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of California at San Diego in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, graduating magna cum laude. While attending UCSD she was inducted into the Caledonian Society for distinguished scholarly achievement of John Muir College at UCSD.
